As per Lornce's comments plus, this has the one piece fairing and the NCR style tail section are a give away as an early 900cc MHR. I owned a very modified one back in the day, I miss that bike.

We did a bit of research on this a couple years ago, the idea being much as you're thinking but with an old XR as the basis and two wheel drive at the rear. This was for mainly off road tracks....
