I can't help much but my '95 made a similar noise in similar situations from when I bought it at 17k until about 40k. Now it does not make any noises and nothing has gone wrong, 50k on the clock...

Leave it empty or find a shorter bolt that flushes up. The original bolt sticks way out and could cause problems if caught on something. Would hate to see a cracked final drive casing!

Not saying you couldnt get the 800 filter to fit but I am holding both in my hand currently at the shop. The 800 is a deeper filter with much more space between the threads and the filter housing...

Had a similar issue after my 1100 sat for over a year. Empty tank, added a gallon or so - nothing. Added another 2 gallons or so for a total of around 3 gallons, fired right up. :clap
