I think it was already mentioned, but it's possible the throw-out bearing is hanging up in the bore. BMW went to a plastic bearing that can swell and seize in there, requiring a bit of re-sizing....

The early GS headlight/gauges were the same as the R80G/S, but with one difference - speedo ratio. The G/S normally came with a 3.36 final drive and the 100GS came with a 3.09.
