I've not rode very far on the earlier one, one thing I did notice though is the stiffer suspension off pavement. The seat is good enough to ride to the bottom of the tank with out stopping.

DR, XR-L and KLR compairison....

The DR 650 is the best at the on/off pavement compromise, though for me it needed a lot of upgrades to get it right. Bigger tank, lower foot pegs, higher bars, tail rack, better carb, better...
