Always slightly warmer
My wife and I notice that Brookings is always a bit warmer than the rest of the coastal towns, great riding down that way. And the surfing!!!!!!

A shorter route
Try the STP bicycle ride route, it is all back roads to Portland, fairly entertaining roads for the most part.

I prefer to do that ride counter cloc wise to get the Hiway 3 section and 101 to PA out of the way first, and maybe avoid Friday afternoon tourist traffic. You could look at using the West Seattle...

Seemed like a pretty good sized crowd today, more bikes than usual? Weather this summer might have helped. It is such a hoot to see all those bikes getting off the the ferry at the same time.

safes, a lesson?
I thought my valuables were secure in a large, 200 lb, fire resistant safe. Thieves slid it right out of the house, thru the garage door. I should have secured it. Very securely.

camping at Ft. Stevens
Fort Stevens is a great state park with camping. Columbia Inn with their covered parking is a big plus for motorcyclists.

I agree, use 9 as a great alternate route to B'ham. If you look at SoundRider.com they show some variations on that route that are kind of fun too.
