Like you said....it keeps the brush from jamming the levers! It was an idea developed during the days of the 1000 bike desert races, in the early 1970's!!!! Great Days indeed!!
Early 1970's? I dare say it's older than that. But it's an especially good idea on a KLR, where a branch between the lever and frame can break the fragile lever mount, for which there is no field repair. Much cheaper than the aftermarket bracket, but of course cannot protect it against breakage due to something like a rock hit.
