Flatter trajectory, more range, more kinetic energy with the .17. More chance of not scaring the pesky critters away and cheaper shooting with the .22
.17 doesn't richochet as much as the .22 - in fact, many police forces here recommend the .17HMR over the .22 as a first rifle now, because of the lack of ricochet.
I'm glad to have both but would probably opt for the .17HMR if I had to make a choice.
thats funny. most people here recommend a .22lr or a 20ga shotgun for a first long gun.
