If you're not going to run high-output lights or heated suit I'd not worry about the alternator.
I've been getting in the low 30s around town... 33mpg on the last tank.
I have pulled and inspected/cleaned the carbs, synced the carbs twice with a Morgan CarbtuneII, cleaned the K&N filter and reoiled it, replaced the sub-air-filter, tires at 42psi, changed the oil recently, etc etc. I just replaced the spark plugs last night and I can't know if they'll make a difference yet, but I doubt they will. Haven't checked the valves, but everyone makes it sound like they stay in spec to about 80,000 miles or so
