When I was in college I carried the rack, (now installed on my mountain bike/truck, and these same bags full of engineering books) on my commute 26 miles form my home out by the foothills down the hill into Denver. And then I'd slide one of those kid seats on and take my oldest daughter for a spin when I needed more work in my legs.

My racing bike did not have lugs, (silly French bike), but that never stopped me from using it like a car. My earlier Mirage, had full lugs and cheesey components to match the stamped dropouts, and waterpipe frame tubes. (1080)...
