When landing a floatplane on glassy water it is impossible to tell how high above the water you are. You just see a reflection of the sky. The danger is either hitting the water surface too hard or flaring too early because you can't tell how high you are. The trick is to land near a shoreline if possible to give some visual reference and to set up an approach with a power setting that will give you about 100 feet per minute decent in a nose high attitude. You basically fly it onto the water without flaring. This technique also works for ski planes on a cloudy day when there are no shadows
