It's another example of what the corporate structure thinks we as american's want. Like with radio, pre programed play list's that exclude anything but what the survey says.
In that 80's era I had great discust with the nature of styling of bikes, as it seemed that everything was going towards a laid back cruiser.
My personal opinion...
Give me a choice everyday between a new 80 special and a new 80 STD,
and I'll choose and 80 STD everysingle day!
Most likely Yamaha's research resulted in the fact that the masses in America wanted specials.
