OK, it is starting to make sense to me now. My Samsung Galaxy Nexus is running on Ice Cream Sandwich and it appears the buttons you are referring to have changed with the OS, or this phone.

This is my first Android device, so the buttons you mentioned didn't make sense to

When the app's map is displayed, the only buttons on the screen are the three you see in the above picture; Back, Home, and Recent Apps.
