I believe the stock drive ratio is 16 front and 42 rear for a 990. Seems a bit tall to me.
I would appreciate advice on what ratio most people end up running?

To the best of my knowledge the 07 - 10 (?) 990's had a stock ratio of 17/42. Whenever they came out with the new bikes (the ones with the different gauge cluster) they changed the stock gearing to 16/42.
For my 19/17 wheels I'm running 17/40 and love it. My 21/18 dirt wheel set is now 17/45. I normally run dirt logging roads, and some jeep trails with the occasional double track thrown in for good measure. I know that a lot of guys that are treating their 9X0's like overgrown endure bikes are running 16/45 for the super tight or super rough stuff. I've got a 250 XC-F for that crap.
