Greg - sorry I can't help out with the connector - but as Ray has suggested, Jim over at Eastern Beaver will more than likely have a ready made solution for you.
As to upgrading the RD04 to a Mosfet Reg/Rec - absolutely
As it's bigger, we had to drop the coolant tank slightly.
