Both are technically correct in that "Lithium Iron" is a member of the "Lithium Ion" family, but IMO they should be named clearly so that the distinction between LiFePO4 and the other chemistries such as LiCoO2 (Lithium Cobalt) and LiNiMnCoO2 (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt) is made.
I prefer to refer to them as LiFe (or LiFePO4) in writing... "Li" is periodic symbol for Lithium and "Fe" is the periodic symbol for Iron... The camel back LiFe should be easy for even a technical dummy to remember. In speech I call them "lithium iron phosphate" with the phosphate added to clearly mark the distinction between chemistries with the very similar sounding "iron" and "ion" and the ambiguity of "lithium-ion" as a whole.
