I think if you want to run risers, then do it. If by having a comfortable bike, that you will want to ride more and get to be a better rider, then worry about fitting in with the "in" crowd later.
I figure that with the amount of dabbing I do, they already think I'm a kook, and anyway, fitting in doesn't make you a better rider or more comfortable either.
