Somehow I have fallen into a situation where we have both.
They are both different animals... for different situations and Mr Cob expressed it perfectly.
For myself, having reverse, 2 WD as an option and going slower [photography] is the key and I am afraid that the GS is going to sit covered and be used only for the black top which we do not ride that often...
Imagine yourself on a pass where suddenly you have to make a U Turn and have no reverse and barely room to turn around. I have sometimes spend hours trying to turn around. No more apprehension now... I know it can be done in minutes!
So it is a choice...
Do you want to see the true beauty of this country off road or just what the tourists contemplate through the nicely paved or if dirt flattened roads?
You need both...
