I understand that they are not as versatile but I'd really like to put together something like the original CAR.

Bout a year ago I was in a shop that had a current production CAR style Colt AR in 9mm. It had the old A1 upper and when I visited with the shop proprietor he told me that's how Colt still makes them. I really wanted the gun, thought a 9mm AR carbine would be a hoot, but the $1100 price tag put me off. I haven't seen one since. But they were still being made as of not all that long ago.
