Are they all that way? I found the same on the last grueling trip I took (which was an early srping night-ride a year and a half ago), and thought I got lucky somehow. At that time of the morning (from like 1 AM to 5 AM) everything in every little town in the middle of Florida is closed, and when you're hypothermic and running on the reserve tank... it is a miserable situation to find yourself in.
I haven't come across one in years that didn't work when the place was closed, but then again all my road-tripping is done in the Western US now. Back when I did this trip (1999) there were definitely a lot of gas stations in NC that would not work when the store was closed.
