In his book about being trapped and ultimately amputating his own arm, Aron Ralston mentions a quote one of his college geology professors used to illustrate the fact that the Earth is continuously changing; "Geologic time includes now". That's all I could think about the whole time I was out there.


There is a theory (well, probably more like a proven concept) in geology called "puctuated equilibrium". It seems the Earth likes having it's geologic system in equilibrium but at times things happen that upset that equilibrium, like earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, glaciation, meteor impacts, etc. I think about those punctuation marks when I'm standing on top of a cliff like that, looking into the "gravity well"...
