Finally, and maybe to the point, I have experience with the Midland portable CB (This one:

It was great for listening to truckers talk about crap, but I was unable to transmit more than five feet, given the non existent ground plane of the BMW LT. Someone who wanted to spend some time getting the antenna situation right could probably improve that to a few more yards......good luck.
