I think as the author you get to choose.
But don't be suprised at negative comments if you choose the audience be damned approach.
Also, whatever you do, you cannot please everyone and keep in mind that human nature being what it is, an unimpressed reader will be more motivated to complain about your efforts than an impressed reader will be to praise them.
