I used to lock the EX500 up to the 8' tall fence behind it at work with a U-lock. Once had someone steal a bike from work, they knocked down my battered old 500 to get to the $36,000 custom harley road king. So... ugly old bikes locked to things are kinda theft-resistant.
My current job, I park the bike inside. Next to the laser. There are cameras everywhere, large and strong employees looking for a fight, and a bit of an obstacle course to even get to it in the first place - all for a dirty KLR - and when all that fails, full coverage insurance.
