Sounds like a lathe to me! Back when I was just learning turning, I made a bowl-turning "lathe" out of an old motor, a 10"x6"x1/2" piece of angle iron and the spindle/hub assembly from the front axle of an old Jeep. It actually worked better for turning bowls than my fancy real lathe does nowadays. These were made on it:
