Sounds like a lathe to me! Back when I was just learning turning, I made a bowl-turning "lathe" out of an old motor, a 10"x6"x1/2" piece of angle iron and the spindle/hub assembly from the front axle of an old Jeep. It actually worked better for turning bowls than my fancy real

Back then I was too dumb to know the difference. In those days I was pretty sure there was nothing I couldn't do and never let logic stop me. Some time in the late "80s I gave the stick to my wife's dad and after he passed I got it back. Got a friend with a table, but we don't see good enough to play very good. Tri-focals suck !!! Really nice bowls. I have no doubt your home made bowl-turning lathe worked better than the new stuff. The pure instinctive tools are always the best.
