17/42 is great for cruising with 6th at about 85-90 mph with only 5600-6000rpm. The giveaway is that your top speed will be attainable with your 5th since our 6th becomes too tall. Best of both worlds I believe is the 16/42 and 17/45. The difference between the two is the longest possible wheelbase for the former vs the shortest possible wheelbase for the later. Longer for high speed stability shorter for flickability....hope it helps...
