There are lots of single speed bikes around here. I have a single speed mountain and a geared mountain bike. I think I am faster up hills and rolling single track on the single speed. Your whole mentality changes when on a single speed and you would be amazed what you can climb. It is not for everyone, but it is fun to have a single speed in the stable.
