I have thought of just strapping down from the rings near the base, but that still leaves contents and upper body free to move.

You want to use a sewing machine case as a cooler or pack the cooler in one?
Does your cooler not have the D rings on it? I spoke with Polar Bear, now ALL of the colors have D-Rings on them.
