I've put 13k miles on my '77 XT500 over the last 4 years and I know exactly how you feel. Recently sold a bike and was looking around for what I wanted next. Considered an SR500, but remembered the vibes and how the XT500 makes my hands ache after just a short while.
Ended up buying a different 500 single - one with a counterbalancer, electric and
kick starting, 4 valves and enclosed chain drive. Looks every bit as good IMO. Plenty of hop-up parts for future performance enhancement if I want it. I've put 1000 miles on it so far and have loved every minute.
