Tuareg Rally Report - Scrutineering (Friday March 7th 2014) - #318 Gabriel Bolton

“A big challenge”

As a first-time desert-rally participant Gabriel Bolton together with his Dirtpunk/ZenOverland teammate Paul Castle initially signed-up for the 2014 Tuareg Rallye in the amateur category, but have elected to race in the Moto Profi classification after all.

“We both felt it was actually better to start off in Profi category, and see how we fair after the first day” Gabriel reveals. “We understand there is some fantastic and technically challenging riding during the week, and it would be a shame to miss out on that” he grins “If we don’t try it in the first place, then we’ll never know if we were good enough after all!”

While no stranger to desert riding himself, and indeed an accomplished Baja 250 racer and UK enduro rider, this is Gabriel’s first road-book navigation rally.

“There seems to be a good mix of people here - some who don’t seem to be taking things all that seriously; while others who have some very professional looking kit, and have clearly invested a lot of time and money in their campaign. It’s lovely to be involved in an event with so much variation” he exclaims.

Gabriel’s personal approach is rather more modest. “The only really important thing is to finish without injuring ourselves” he says. “In fact to be honest - it doesn’t really matter if we don’t actually finish - just as long as we still have a great time” he smiles.

“At the same time, it would also be nice if we could actually achieve a reasonable [overall] result too by the end of the week” he continues. “Both Paul and I have raced in UK rallies together before, and it usually ends up getting a little competitive - between ourselves and the rest of the competition” he adds with a smile. “It can be very difficult to resist that, and I think for both of us that is going to be one of the biggest challenges.”

Gabriel Bolton #318 - will be riding the Tuareg Rallye 2014 with his Dirtpunk/ZenOverland teammate Paul Castle #317, in the Moto Profi group.
