Dave, I have done both, installed dual carb top end on a XR650L bottom end and single carb XR600 top end onto dual carb XL600 bottom end. The biggest differences are the head bolt diameter and cam chain alignment. Check out these two threads over at TT in the Honda XR600/650 forum. Hybrid XR650L/XL600R and Another 600 project.
