I only have really one safe route for road bike riding, because it has the paved shoulder outside the rumble strips on the higway. I have to ride 10 miles to get to a paved county road, so I always leave to the north and return from the south, so my ride is usually the same.

Same situation here. When I leave the house, my choices are to hit the state highway with lots of truck traffic, 55mph speed limit and no shoulders

or go the other way, which is about 2 miles of gradual down hill that puts me out in the farmlands where road riding isn't a guaranteed death sentence. So, that means every ride ends with a 2 mile up hill ride to the house.
Thankfully, my ride home is to the south, and there is rarely, if ever a wind in my face situation to deal with.
