That´s a pretty clever arrangement, actually (once people understand it:lol3 ). I´ve never seen a crossing like that here in Germany. Possibly a matter of space and real estate prices.

A bit OT, but here's a pretty cool animation of a Continuous Flow Intersection.

That looks complicated, does it actually work? and how is it any different than just having a left turn signal and lanes? I'm not talking about where left turns are allowed on green when it's safe to do so, the bane of all motorcyclists. But a separate and distinct left turn light where only the left turners are allowed to go in both directions, no through traffic. Then when the through traffic has green there's no left turn traffic allowed. I first saw this in Palm Springs and couldn't believe how fast people drove/rode through town until after being there for a few days I realized you didn't have to worry about cars turning in front of you at lights, all through traffic had a clear path through the intersections. It seemed to work pretty well.

It used to be like that here in Las Vegas about 20 years ago. It works fine untill you get so much traffic backed up in the left turn lanes that it overflows and prevents drivers who want to go straight through the intersection from doing so, then you get what we have here now, people just getting frustrated and disregarding the red lights and red left turn arrows. $300 fine.

I came closer to getting killed on that road than I think I ever have in my life (and I've worked pretty hard at getting myself killed). It's a fun, twisty road through the mountains. I was throwing the bike around pretty good- sheer cliff off to the right (no guardrail). I came around a "curva peligrosa" (dangerous curve) and a truck was coming the other way and took up the whole road. He had nowhere to go and I could either drive into the truck or off the cliff. We both did what we could and I just brushed the truck and got around it without going over the edge- but I mean by about an inch. I was shook up so bad I had to pull over till I stopped shaking. I can tell you I slowed down after that!

I don't get it. How is that better than a regular intersection? It sure didn't look "continuous" to me. In fact, there were extra red lights you have to look for, even if you're turning right or left.

This isn't my picture, but this is a continuous flow intersection:
