HOLY SHIT!!! Jeff, how the hell you doing?? Good God man, I thought you fell off the face of the earth. How long has it been? Forever? I'll PM you ...
Great thread. Glad to see folks are honest enough to admit one of the faux pas of riding. OK, one of my many. On a lonely backroad of BFQuebec on my way to the Translabrador Highway I stop to take a picture. The bike is near vertical. I forget this when I remount and 'bump' the bike up with my left knee before sweeping the kickstand to the rear. I can't stop it, and the pig is now on it's right side at the crest of a hill and on the edge of a road that logging trucks seem to favor. I am so pissed that I forget to take a picture of this most worthy scene. The next ten minutes are spent trying to gain a foothold in the loose dirt of the ditch/shoulder before I finally get smart and just off load all of my crap. Sometimes the hard way is the easy way.
Hmmm...I've mentioned the slide into the 10' deep ditch while attempting to go round a flood barricade on a probably-no-longer-flooded road (I knew the area) for a look-see and misjudging how much clearance I had elsewhere, but I didn;t see that anywhere in this thread. But here's my favorite, for the first time ever posted on the net! Looking at "bigger" bikes after learning the ropes on a midsize Kaw that couldn't handle freeway or distance rides, not yet knowledgable enough to know by the name when one was impossible for me to ride, and so blinking at the hieght of the Sabre some guy was selling. No way, I tell him, can I handle that bike. It's MUCH too tall. The guy, obviously anxious to sell, assures me I can too and invites me to straddle the thing and see for myself. "Okay, it's your funeral" I reply, shrugging, through a leg over, and at his urging pull it up off the side stand...and promptly drop it to the other side as Straight Up the seat hieght literally pulls my feet off the ground.....
184. I like to wheelie up the driveway, touching the front wheel down, front brake locked, so I just tap the garage door. My wife hates when we do this two up .....but she's used to it. So one day I wheelie up (one up) on the Rally Twin, and touch the wheel down, already locked. Except, there were weeds growing through the crack in the driveway which is excactly where I touch down, locked up. It flips sideways and... I carreen through my own garage door, sideways, breaking it in half. Laughing my ass off, as I'm crashing through my garage door! I'm LOL now just typing this....I just stuck the door back together, the scar is there as proof and a reminder to touch down just before the weeds in the crack! How's that?
On a long ride on my ST1100 stop at a gas station to check my map. While reading the map both feet on the ground the bike falls over. Still don't know what happened. Had to unload all my camping gear inorder to pick it up.
Nice. But, as before, this has not happened until you supply photographic evidence of either a) you sliding, b) the bike sliding, or c) the door repair.
Or.................after getting a new rear tire installed and going down just 20 feet from turning left as you exit the dealership, your brother (service manager) and the entire shop watching as you go down. Your Honda ST1100 losing a mirror, mirror cover, and a LH bag cover. And the backside of your favorite riding pants.
Trying to snake around the front of my pickup to get into the garage. Damn those BMW bags are wide. Well attached too!!
When your beloved attempts to back the car out of the garage, catches the front bumper on the bike, and PULLS it down. Good for removing the front bumper from a Nissan Maxima, too.
Yep, it's on video too. Wasn't much of a hill, but the rut the rear wheel fell into turned me directly left and the wheelie over the bank into the tree was easy. Don't know if this counts since the bike never actually fell over. <IMG class=imgBorderOn onmouseover="this.className='imgBorderOn'" title="Joe Harris (tiger955) > Frank Smith, the proud DRZ picker" onmouseout="this.className='imgBorder'" height=75 alt="Joe Harris (tiger955) > Frank Smith, the proud DRZ picker" hspace=0 src="https://tiger955.smugmug.com/photos/40258084-Ti.jpg" width=100 align=middle border=0>
I did the same on my Guzzi, after 100K miles and XX tyres, the first time I get a dealer to change the tyres I drop it turning onto the main road. Not much damage, cracked screen (why?), indicator popped off and some really rough, tough looking gouges on the rocker protector bars. ++ Guido
Wait, you guys missed one, bet you have not heard this before. Girlfriend on her own bike, boyfriend on his following her. They come to a stop before making a right onto a major road. Boyfriend busy paying attention to car load of girls to the left. Boyfriend thinks girlfriend infront of him on her bike has already made the right hand turn....boyfriend attempts to make right hand turn without taking eyes off of car full of girls on left and rear ends back of girlfriends bike whom has not made the right hand turn yet due to traffic and knocks girlfriends bike over and girlfriend off of her bike. Moral to the story....boyfriend causes girlfriend to dump bike, girlfriend dumps boyfriend.
I brought my new KLR650 home in the back of my pickup truck because the roads in mid April were still partly ice covered. I couldn't wait to drive it and even though my 100 m diveway was ice rutted I figgured if I can make it to the road I could go for a nice first ride. I almost made it, but the bike just slipped out sideways from under me on the melting ice at walking speed. My wife, who disapproved of the bike purchase, was watching this of course. No damage other than to my pride. The only other time I dropped it I was driving in some tall grass and came to a stop to access a hill and where I put my foot down was a hole that I could not see through the tall grass. Again, no bike damage, but a stick embedded itself in the palm of my hand when I landed. Ouch.
What memories this thread brings back! Many I tried to forget, except this one time my brother and I were trying to get back home instead of getting a hotel. We pushed hard through a very hot day in Utah and now it was about midnight with an hour to go, getting very sleepy (stupid I know) and trying to keep up with my brothers street fighter modified CBX with my new Transalp. Suddenly his jacket that was bungeed to the back of his bike comes off and inflated in the wind, in my headlight it looked like his body flying through the air in front of me! Well I panicked of course and hiway 191 north of Moab didnt have squat for shoulders then, so I found myself diving off into the blackness to the right of the road. there was about a 3' drop into the sagebrush where I skidded to a highside. My brother didn't come back looking for me for at least 10miutes before he realized that the road seemed darker for some reason, just in time for him to find me just getting the bike back up on the road. Then I promptly dropped the bike again on the pavement 'cause I thought I had the kickstand down!
Hey there! Thanx for the warm welcome. Sometimes the true stories no matter how sad, are the funniest! I have only just begun! This is going to be one kick ass adventure!
