My Great-Great Grandfather (a 16-year-old Private in the 17th Arkansas Infantry, CSA) was wounded at Pea Ridge. I visited there about 15 years ago. It was quite moving, having a personal connection.
Perhaps someone can shed light on what this structure is? Its near the center of the Adirondack Park in NY. I *think* it was a coke oven that got re-purposed into something else and then abandoned?
That is the old smelter in Tahawus. Lots of interesting history there, if you walked down to the river behind the "chimney" you would have found enormous pistons and a crankshaft which were turned by a waterwheel to blow air into the smelter. One year we rode our mtn. bikes down to the old mine area and walked thru all the old buildings we could, like a ghost town. I heard the whole complex was demolished a few years ago.
Reading the history behind the land it's amazing how advance they were at the time they build this . The lake , river and canal system is wild.

I was about to ask the same - but then I realized I know one of them: Near Lamont, right Al? (Hello to you both!)
