It seems my bike sits a lot. i never ride it. All the roads are flat. All are straight. How many times can you ride to Fernandina Beach? But the fernandina ride is one of the best in Florida, or north fla anyway. I have to go here to go anywhere... most of my rides are near the water...this road is hecksher drive...note the cruize ship is in Hecksher Drive runs into A1A. it's a very nice ride as far as Florida goes... to the extreme right of this picture is Hugenot park campground. $12 a night per site out of state. It's a good place to camp if you like water on 3 sides... the tnorth tip of hugenot park is our kitesurfiing mecca and the left side of the road (north side) is the Alamacana boat ramp
another crown jewell to there, turn off of A1A here takes you to some nice roads brings you here... refurbished slave quarters... oh yea, my weapon of choice for this ride the Kingsley Plantation... a little more of Fla's best dirt roads..there was a city owned golf course through here. It was closed 10 years or more and has gone back to nature for the most part. of course i came back out by the water Instead of riding on up to Fernandina, I turned around for the 1/2 mile ride back to the ferry across the ST Johns river. Bikes get head of the line and I am not first in line immediately following the ferry on the right is Mayport Florida's finest. It is a tradition fish camp and the food is great! just after the Coast Guard station is another jewell...a really god spot to fish, jet ski, kayak or just hang out. from atop the Wonderwood Bridge over the intercoastal waterway entering my neighborhood
this is my first attempt on a ride report. i can't spell, can't type and can't edit pics after the fact. i'll do better, i promise!
good job, lots of pictures witch is definitely a plus. (people don't like to read too much) There's good riding down in the sarasota/port toilet area (where I'm at), and the palm beach/broward part of A1A is nice too.
You posted some really nice pics there, really like the ones of the dirt road and trees! Nice to see some of north Florida and I'm sure all will agree that even though the roads are flat and mostly straight, we to the north will be VERY envious of your local a bit later this year when our weather turns cold
That's a fine ride report. Photos are a plus. After living and riding in Florida for over 30 years, I've learned that if you want to ride interesting roads you head away from the coasts, not towards them. The middle of the state on "the Ridge" is where the curves and elevation changes are.
Here's a short 119 mile loop starting just west of Orlando in Clermont. From Clermont take 561 south turn left and stay south on sr 33 Turn right and go west on Green Pond Rd. Continue west on Rock Ridge, Cross US 98 on Rock Ridge and turn right to go north on Old Dade City then left and NW on US 98 all the way to US 301. Right and north on 301 to Clinton Left and west on Clinton then right and north on Prospect to SR 52 Left and west on SR 52 to Curley Rd. Right and north on Curley Rd. through San Antonio. Have lunch at the Mexican restaurant just east of Curley Rd on Pennsylvania Ave in San Antonio. Continue north on Curley then left and west on Saint Joe then right and north on Lake Iola crossing I-75 then left and west on Bayhead Rd West on Bayhead to a T intersection then right on Bellamy Bros. Rd (581) North on 581 to Powell, right on Powell then left and north again on on Emerson Rd. Right on 98/50 then 50 all the way back towards Clermont Send me a PM and I'll send you a .gdb Garmin route. Let me know how you like this one.
I wish I was down there right now. I've had to break out the winter gear here in MD. Enjoy the dry and sunny season!
Hey ya done good partner! What's wrong with those roads? I know some Pretty Orange Wheels that would absolutely LOVE those roads, and I think I Know a V-Strom what would Love some Appalachian Mountainside! HUH? HUH? Right? Them where some goodly pictures too!
HEY RIFF! I got a spare room any time those orange wheels want to roll on down :) I still plan on adding more pics to this rr. there are a few more things like BIG GRAY BOATS that some would like to see i'm sure :) biketoberfest is coming too and that usually generates a few pics. i'm heading to blue ridge mc campground friday. if you don't have to work sunday, you should meet me.
ya do know vintage days is this wkend don't cya? i just wanted to mention that in case ya didn't know
kitesurfer, Nice pictures and trip report. I visited Fernandina beach years ago when piloting my boat from Annapolis to Key West. It was the week before Christmas, and in the morning the aluminium floating docks were covered with ice! Not what I expected in Florida. Thanks for posting,
to continue....my bike is in storage now for 4 months. my doctor has forbidden me to ride...or kitesurf...or surf...or even walk! but i showed him. i just bought a new toy! forgive me for adding to this ride report in the car, but i wanted to get fernandina beach in here too. There was a good kite show going on. so if you get to fernandina beach, SLIDERS has the view, the atmosphere, local entertainment and decent food.
You need a new Doctor. ;-) Nice pictures. I am down in South Florida and do much of the same kind of riding. Hope everything get's better and you can ride soon.
