It would be nice if I could blame the tires, but this was 100% rider error.

Error 1a: it was a hard pack road with little sand or gravel. This road could easily be done on a powered wheelchair. It was so easy I wasn't paying attention. I was sitting on the saddle, not standing on the pegs, and most emphatically not looking where I was going.

Error 1b: Not looking resulted in the bike aiming for the only spot of maybe 2" deep soft stuff on the entire road.

Error2: When I finally noticed where I was going I cut power to ensure that the front end would dig in as deep as possible into the little sand that existed.

The pig is heavy. The new LC sounds like it will be just as heavy. I can only hope that if I'm going to keep doing stupid stuff like that the LC will be easier to pick up.

This setup (street rear with knobby front) is how many riders roll, especially in western USA... The long distances eat the rear knobbies, and the front wheel is the one that benefits most from the added traction.

Don't you need the traction where the power is, i.e. rear wheel?

Back slides can be controlled but if the front washes out you usually crash. That said, I prefer knobbies on both ends for offroading.

True. On a large trailie the front is most important. The rear though, wears twice as fast as a front knobbie, so a standard GS style tire will last about the same as a knobby front, meaning you can get close to 10K miles from a set, and still do plenty of pavement.

Yes, but... the knobbies are not very good as knobbies after about 8K miles. They are fine as street tires as long as you don't mind a somewhat rougher ride for the last 2K. At 10-11 K the knobs have turned into a wedge, with one edge having lots of lift and the other edge at the wear bars.

I suppose I should head down to may favorite dealer and remind them that I exist as well as tell them to call when they get an LC in for test rides. It's been a long time since I stepped into the show room.

International Press Launch is in South Africa starting January 19th

Hmm, I heard Morocco at end of February followed by dealer launch in early March in Morocco as well.

Maybe BMW are splitting the launch for Europe and America, because according to Kevin Ash (UK journalist) he is heading to SA in January.
