This is one of those steeper/knarlier than it looks pics. I'd been down this twice in the last several years. The 2nd time just wondering if I could do it again and if making it down successfully the 1st time wasn't a fluke. 2nd time was successful. No reason to try it a 3rd, nothing left to prove to myself, except that I'm still capable of doing something stupid and having a bad idea. There's nothing I hate more than a forward endo.
I'm so glad that people are posting these pictures. It just makes me feel like I'm not THAT bad of a rider anymore.
Doesn't look too bad, but underneath a few inches of that water the front wheel is up to the brake rotor in thick viscous clay which held it in place like concrete - I couldn't budge it neither forward nor backward and I was out in the middle of nowhere, alone, with darkness fast approaching, and a partially healed broken collar bone which wasn't yet up to 100%. :eek1 I eventually managed to work it out sideways:
I was in a groove and passed my friend Spencer, this is rare. Then I came up on my friend Rick and passed him, this was a first. I was working hard and my goggles were fogging up, but I wasn't going to stop and let them pass me back. I guess I still have some competitive nature left in me. I wish I didn't as it seams to bring on the hurt. I hit a rock and went over the edge. I supermanned down about 8 feet and landed chest first on a rock. ATGATT saved my ass. Sore ribs, knee and wrist, but not enough to stop riding. Saw double for awhile, but got up and took this picture. It took 4 of us to haul the bike(250exc) back up. Bike was generally fine.
Mikey on the west side of the Uncompahgre Plateau. This was the sixth downed tree we had to cross and he was gettin' pissed.
Just found this thread - excellent stuff. I've got a few old pics from the BMW offroad course in Wales for you. The MCN journalist who was road testing this new R1200GS wished he hadn't let one of the instructors borrow it...it was endo'd after a wheelie went badly wrong. Isn't there meant to be something covering those valves up? Doesn't look too pleased does he I've no idea what this chap thought he was doing. It took 5 people and a pickup with a tow rope to get this out.
Yeah, it DID seem like a good idea at the time... And then he convinced me that I would probably be able to make it, even though he didnt... It realy did seem like a good idea since I was riding the Rokon. That hole was softer than it looked... The guy in the Ford didnt believe us when we told him that it wasnt a good idea. The same hole that I had the Rokon stuck in a couple hours earlier. La Sal Mountains, above Moab...
I don't remember if we got pics or not but I went with a buddy to check out a small mx track his friend had built. I hopped on a kx80 (think monkey f*ing a football) and started to buzz around the track. Here's where the bad idea comes in....I was coming across the table top and gassed it to keep the front end up while I was coming down the back side. Well, soft sand edge and little bit o' juice and I looked down to see the back tire falling away from me. Oh sh*t...tuck and roll tuck and roll. Did a quick wiggle check and nothing hurt (too much) and hopped up hootin and hollerin like I meant to do it. Handle bars a bit bent but f it, it was fun. Oh yeah first post...cherry poppin time! anyone got a cigarette?
I remember reading this thread.....fantastic journey. I got an elevated heart rate just reading about this situation. Holy S%*T!!! Makes me think "Gee, do I want to ride my bike (fill in the blank) for a good photo, when I think about that. Glad you got the bike out! Bones
Just read this entire thread. I decided that I am a pussy when it comes to offroad riding. Guess I will keep it that way. I have had some "on the race track adventures" but have learned the hard way that we all age and have tales to share, if we are lucky. Kudos to you guys. Bones
