You can also buy a $15 blinker relay specifically for leds. I got mine at cycle gear and also online. PLugs right into the harness where the old one was and you don't need to mess with anything.
I recently picked up a clamp&etc, and planning to mount the same heated grips, I asked Paul to make one of the 2 big holes to fit the factory toggle switch and asked about the LED's for the indicator holes. I got the clamp with the right hole and a bag of LED to fit. Just need to ask the man before he ships. I don't recall if I heard he would mod the hole for the switch here or on the HDB site.
You may have seen a round 3-way rocker switch (hi/off/lo) that fits into the HDB switch hole, very clean and good looking switch. Paul does indeed need to pre-drill for that switch style. This round switch comes in many warmer kits, vs the more common toggle bar type. The common bar type doesn't need to be pre-drilled by Paul. Here's a linky to a kit with the round switch. I ran hot grips for years, work great, but they're pretty hard on the hands during long multi-day rides.
There is a hole already in mine, but it's not big enough. Would I bugger it up if I just enlarged the hole in a drill press with a 13/16" bit so it would fit the switch?
drill press and right bit is all you need. Drill from bottom and leave a lip at the top (~1/8"), the rocker switch presses into place from the top.
I've got a set of HDB hand guards on order. I spend 95% of my time in dirt, ride hard, and end up slamming into the bars and clamps from time to time. Has anyone generated a solution for some type of bar pad on the top clamp? I ordered the SXdx top clamp and don't have a large need to access switches and power outlets. If I'm unable to generate a solution from this thread I'll probably end up buying some twin wall bars and use a bar pad on the crossbar. Thoughts?
Any trick to getting HDB to contact me to place an order? I've got too many questions to simply order off of their website. I've sent two emails within a week of each other and still haven't heard back. Would it help to order something off of the website and request a call to discuss options?
I emailed him and got a reply the same day a few months ago. It is the Holiday Season and he is a one man shop I believe. Probably real busy.
I've bought plenty of stuff from Paul and that's the way it goes sometimes. One day you'll get an email in 3 minutes, others it's awhile. One man band. But you can't find another vendor as helpful and committed to his product than HDB. His setup works excellent, I've crash tested it on my dirt bike more times than I care to admit and it is super tough. I mounted it above a BRP triple with Scotts damper on my Husqvarna and on my CBR I have the nicer top plate mounted to an Emig triple with damper. It's worth the wait, just understand he's not blowing you off
Hi Guys, thanks for the heads up and the props, really have to apologize though, I'm just now getting caught up with emails from the last 2 weeks, I have a few more to do then I'm onto phone calls. If I've missed you please get me a PM. We are still small and I now have my nephew helping out in the shop, but it is busier then ever and we're trying as best we can to keep up. Also I'd like to thank ADV for all the support, this has been a good year for us. Use "adv15" for a discount code til the end of the year.
I just ordered my first setup from paul! Excited to put it in. My dad ordered is last month and I love the product. Thanks for all the great information it really helped me make my decision.
Hi, just realised your picture is what I sent to HDB with a "I want that!" note... What bar ends (length also?) have you got and consequently did you go for their longer version of guards? Thanks a lot! Ev.
...I don't think the width is really critical. I used a set of BMW bar weights and put my handguards on the inboard of the weights. Between the bar weights and the HDB Anti-Vibe Threaded Inserts and new ProGrips the vibes are down to a minimum.
I highly recommend HDB products and Paul is a pleasure to work with. After I mounted mine, I decided to put a GPR under the bars steering damper on. This required a different top clamp. Paul swapped out the top clamp for no charge. It is really refreshing to see a business that is genuinely interested in the satisfaction of their customers.
Was wondering if anybody else has installed these on there bike when they've had Renthal Fatbars? The tap that comes with the handguards seems too big for the inside diameter of the bar ends, and just keeps hogging the end out and not threading in. Anybody else ran into this issue before?
I had this exact issue last week. I've only used a tap once in my life previous (that went fine!) and was unable to source a T-handle locally that would hold the HDB 3/8" bit... so I had to use a vise grip to hold the tap. 3/8" is the start of the 3rd larger size of Tap handles, and I went to 5 shops trying to purchase, and could only find them online for $80 - no time or money for that. Bottom line is I failed to tap my Fat Bars either through incompetence or incompatibility. I'm using Fat Bar Ricky Carmichael Highs to be exact. It was very frustrating. The tap would just slip out, and now I have a new 1/4" beveled inner edge on both sides of my bars. I didn't have time to seek professional help or bother HDB with the issue, as my bike just shipped out for a big trip, so I made due with these: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/53/218/962/-/9587/Tusk-D-Flex-Bar-End-Clamp-Handlebar-Inserts

Taps are designed to be used in a specific sized hole. It should be stamped on the tap, or search online for the info. It flat won't work if you are attempting to run the tap into a hole that is too small!
