Very much appreciate the great writing, wonderful pics and unique adventure. A quick question... would the wine bags have split if they were filled up less, or does the heat cause the vapour pressure of the petrol to simply increase so that even if you had less volume, the bags would split from the pressure?

I've use the wine bag system for carrying water on hiking trips. They also work well as pillows and as flotation for river crossings (filled with air). Can also make great splints. Wrap around the broken limb, then loosely wrap with bandages, leaving the spout exposed. Then blow up with air and the wine bag stiffens between the limb and the bandages.

MJ did not fill them to full capacity as to leave some room for vapour pressure and if he falls they would not burst on impact.

It was quite hot and there was obviously just not enough room left for the favour to expand without bursting the outside rapping. The inside plastic part took the pressure quite well and even the dissolving properties of petrol did no damage to the bag.


The very funny part is we tried to source fuel bags like those all over the net, and even manufacturers of water bladders advised us not to use their bladders for fuel. Well after many drunk weekends this ridiculous cheap solution won the gamble

Only adventure I had in Angola was golfing on the roughest course I've ever played.

I like your Angola better than the one I saw--which was a nice hotel, a private beach near the rich Generals' homes (oil wealth) and a kind of deep poverty we in the west can't easily imagine.
