I am about ready to pull the trigger on the Virb. I do not currently own a GoPro (therefore I do not have a mount collection). I just shoot still photos from a point and shoot. I would like to use the camera on my GS and Roadking. I also think those nature time lapse are really cool. Can someone advise me on a good overall package (including mounts) and a good purchase source. Best
Best to stay away from the GoPro mounts - they are badly designed and will fail for you eventually by tilting when you least expect it, or breaking in two, and the domed nut required to tighten down the pivots fall out and are easily lost, all of which happened to me on a number of occasions. I find GPSCity has the best packages right now. Here's one example: Garmin VIRB Elite Extreme Hold Mount Bundle. If you don't need the Elite model, you can save $100 by getting the standard VIRB.
Opinions will vary here... I'm like the ram mounts. I have several and have just ordered more. I do a lot of photography and have lots of photo stuff. I wish Garmin would of incorporated a better 1/4 20 mount. Then I could use most of my different camera mounts. At some point I am going to do a little review of my mounts and show the good the bad and the ugly....well IMHO anyway. Page 42 has some different mounts. And as always GPSCity has some good videos on mounts. Really depends what your plans are. But seem to me different mounts/angles and also small tripod to ride buy makes good video. Fred Fred
Here's one of my mistakes I set the Virb to take a photo every 2 seconds. I wanted it to time lapse video every 1/2 second. I had 131 images to process it really taxed my PC and I have a pretty high end PC...well I think so anway This was the results. <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/qtHAvCgE0WE?feature=player_detailpage" allowfullscreen="" width="640" frameborder="0" height="360"></iframe> Didn't turn out too bad though. I'm getting an error when trying to view the video as it says it's private. What software are you using to assemble the timelapse or are you editing the video from the Virb? I find Virtualdub is very good for assembling timelapse, the speed is good, you can do a lot of operations in one go and it doesn't seem to need much hardware performance. I came across it initially as I couldn't build my timelapses on my laptop at the time (Core 2 Duo 2Ghz/2GB ram) as it was running out of resources at around 2,000-2,500 images when using the timelapse software I was trying. On the same hardware Virtualdub could do a 10,000 image without breaking a sweat as well as deflickering, resizing and cropping the images as it produced the timelapse. John
There's a Virb in the flea market right now for those looking: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=948694&highlight=virb
Well it is private just to keep it from view on my YouTube channel. But it should work from this thread. Anyone else having trouble viewing the video?? I am using PS CS6. I have a look at Virtualdub and see...thanks. That got me thinking and tried Startrails software it worked great real fast and my PC ran just fine. Give the link in this thread a try and see if it works. Thanks Fred
Kids are great. Note to parents: A bouncy ball in the same room as the large screen TV cannot end well.
That is true That's my first of three grandkids. And she knows how to handle grandpa that's for sure. Fred
The VIRB sure does work well in the cold! My wife forgot her VIRB in the glove compartment of the car overnight, and this morning I went to get it and immediately started filming this wild winter weather we're having. It fired right up, and has been going for about 1.5 hours already, with two bars still left on the battery gauge. Amazing.
Knowing what I know now after this weekends rides - the mounts I have been using absolutely suck (yeah you GoPro). For those of you in the know, how do the RAM mounts hold up to vibration? I had a seat post mount for Sunday's ride where I shot the video backwards, and even with stabilization, the video shook like I was riding out an earthquake. Will RAM's mounts do a better job for me?
Thanks! The Kinsey / Road Apple Rally trails (they encompass Seven Sisters/Rigor Mortis) are dirtbike friendly out here, plus there is a massive moto-cross track in Aztec. Only trails locked out to motors are Anasazi, Alien Run, and Mountain View. Everything else is open. I can get a couple of maps for you if you think you might head out this way.
