AM radio

I really like listening to the game and talk radio while munching the miles. Im looking for a decent inexpensive way to
get AM on my bike. Something that actually works and get reception. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know what you call inexpensive, but the Xm- sirius I have is the shit, I don't have it on the bike, I could run it through my GPS though, But I do take it with me everywhere else, it is nice where ever you go the same talk show's, game days, and I really like the old time radio shows which I find amazing from the 30's 40's & 50's are always there, and you can look up on the E-net the list of what is coming up...

What kind of GPS are you using?

Garmin 665, I think there are a few different, makes, models, out there that do the same thing..

I have that little Sony and use it as a back up. I think it needs an external antenna of some sort. It is easy for the signal to come and go.

It has a built in ferrite antenna for am.

I'm addicted to AM radio (Radio National here in Oz) and like to camp in the mountains, where AM is often hard to get. I recently bought a radio with PLL technology (that's Phase Locked Loop). It is digitally tuned and locks onto a station so you don't get the drifting in and out. Haven't used it while riding, but highly recommend it for night-time listening. Just google 'PLL AM radio'.

My only complaint is the digitally 'stepped' volume control. Sometimes it's either too loud or too quiet.

I have that Sony Walkman as well. It's a very good little pocket radio. Only thing I used to notice about it was that FM station reception was fairly easily blocked by my body (used to use it walking, jogging, and biking). That's mainly a consequence of having the headphone cord being the 'antenna' for FM. AM it was great, and similarly position/orientation sensitive as any AM radio is. When I listen to AM, it's to very far-away stations at night, as often as not.

I just wished it had more power output because I wear plugs and need traffic report while coming in on the highway at 120kph...

Been quite happy with my sony srf-59, mainly use it for fm. Cheep, decent sound & reception, good life outta 1 aa batt. Analog, no prob to adj with gloves on.

I'm adding my Sirius tuner to my bike too so my wife and I can listen while riding along with our sena headsets.

+1 Great little pocket sized radio with PLL so it doesn't drift. Battery life on 2 AA batteries is amazing. Haven't tried it while riding though.

Ive heard radios on bikes need special wiring. I figured to wire to a lighting circuit. Is it just a filter?

They used to have "CCrane" modified radios that eliminted "step" audio and silenced tuning during the days of "Art Bell", I don't know if they still do those modifications. Might check with them. Also go dig around in their "Specials" section for some deals.

I use tune in radio on my iPhone. Obviously it only works where you get cell service.

Plus a cheap set of in-ear headphones is what I use. It is dirt cheap, amazingly good with batteries, and get super reception (much better than my fancy kloss). I like to tune NPR on FM and college games on AM (thanks to ESPN for RUINING sports broadcasting). I could not be happier with the performance, price etc.

Most AM radio shows are podcasted these days. I listen to Petros and Money Show via podcast while riding all of the time. Wouldn't work for listening to games but there are enough podcasts out there to keep you listening forever. My favorites are: The Adam Carolla Show, PMS, The Film Vault, Radiolab, Freakinomics, Mysterious Universe, Doug Loves Movies, Dave Damashek Football Program, and This American Life. I have mostly stopped listening to the radio since I started podcasting but I used to primarily listen to AM sports talk radio.
