Plug looks good, not wet. I would bet you are right on with the packing being soaked.
It's kinda strange, for having spent so much money on this bike I would have thought the PO would have treated it better.

So far so good with my 12. Still on the original plug at a FULL season of riding/woodsy racing.
Chug for days.

I run mine at 60:1 high quality synthitic (Motorex)as stated in the Manual, no spooge, no fouled plugs, 100+ hours and still starts first kick and pulls like the it did on day one. I think KTM have enough test data to know what pre-mix works, I find it irritating to ride behind someone running 40:1 on single trail, there is no need to subject fellow riders to a smoke screen just so you can maybe go four seasons without doing the bottom end instead of three. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Good advice. What is sometimes forgotten is that 40:1 is actually a leaner fuel mixture than 60:1.

The more oil in the mix the less fuel therefore 40:1 is leaner than 60:1. Not by much but it is leaner.

We can assume air is constant...

40:1 provides 3.2 ounces of oil and 124.8 ounces of fuel / gallon

60:1 provides 2.1 ounces of oil and 125.9 ounces of fuel / gallon

40:1 is leaner as there is less fuel for the same quantity of air.

The question is what is the effect of a lean state due to more oil. Will the engine run hotter because it's lean or cooler because there's extra oil?

No problem with fouling at all with my '06 xcw.
I also have a coolant overflow catch tank.
Not sure if it's really needed, since it was on the bike when I bought it, but I never had any boil over issues in the Fl. sand.

Any of you 300 guy's using cooling fans or see a need to run a fan or overflow tank? I haven't got enough seat time on mine to get a feel for the cooling system.

How about db snorkel? I don't think they are in business anymore but anyone have first hand experience with the that sort of product?

back to fuel capicity on my brand new leftover 300 xc. To ride the white rim trail...... 111 miles i will have 50 percent too little or 50 percent too less fuel.

There is a db snorkel on mine. Not really sure of the pros or cons of it. It has been on the bike since I got it from chippertheripper I know he said he wished they still made them for his new 300.

Maybe he will chime in on how well it actually works. I haven't really ridden with any other 2-strokes, and have not tried running the bike with it off to see a difference.

I have a 97 300 EXC that I got last year. We were in Moab last weekend, and all of a sudden I'm getting no friction at all on the kickstarter. I was able to roll-start it down hill to finish the ride, and there was no grinding or weird noise/feel, but now I'm home and ready to figure this out. I'm a novice wrench. Am I getting in over my head on this, or is it not that complicated?:huh

Taking off the sidecover and doing an inspection isn't difficult, the issue will probably be obvious once you have it open.

Replace the top end. Piston, rings, piston pin bearing............. Sneek a peek at the crank while your'e in there.

Sadly, funds are real tight right now and the poor 300 is not getting touched yet cause of it.

So, looking for some charity...in the form of parts. If anyone has these parts laying around, and have no use for them, and would be willing to pass them along, I'd appreciate it.

1. Gasket kit for 98-03 300 EXC, or parts of
2. Piston kit, or parts of( stock bore)

I don't NEED to get the KTM back and running at this point, but I WANT to....and that is how we are dealing with money right now.....getting what we NEED, and not what we WANT.

That's totally unacceptable, 2 weeks and I'd be pissed.

I had a friend order some plastics for his bike from them and waited a couple months to get them. I won't be ordering from them anytime soon. There are too many other quality vendors out there who provide excellent service.
