Got this for my son last year at Christmas. We're looking for a rail mounted sight. I originally wanted an Eotech but there doesn't seem to be a way to over come the front post blocking it without using a tall riser. What's anybody else using for optics on this piece ?
Our 552s were mounted directly to the upper receiver, and I never...ever...noticed the front sight. .
This is sounding good. So I can just mount the Eotech right to the integral picatinny rail and the front sight will too close to the objective to be visible ? I know this works with conventional scopes.
Here is one mounted on the standard picatinny. This is how most of the Army shoots now a days with an AimPoint or EO Tech. Unless you're a fancy operator and you get the cool shit. Shit picture, but quickly pulled off google.
I just bought a 512 and it works fine for me. There are a bunch more expensive ones but I dont need the night vision adapter capability.
If your not fighting a war you can get by with a sight mark ultra shot pro. I run them in 3 gun on both my AR and shotgun. Bought 3 for the kids and grandson for Christmas. Around $125 bucks at optics planet. The one with the quick connect and manual switch is almost indestructible.
While I hear lots of people say that they don't notice the front sight while using an EOTech, that wasn't how it worked for me. I can't say that it had much effect on my shots but it drove me nuts so I finally swapped my front sight for a YHM folding version and could only be happier if it included an adjustable gas block (different subject entirely). However, anytime I put a scope on the rifle the front sight effectively disappeared, not problem whatsoever. That begs the question (well ,to me), I wonder if it works the same with the EOTech 3x magnifier installed? I never thought to unfold the sight since getting the mag, project for tomorrow! I don't know what the magnification factor has to be for the front sight to 'vanish'. Even without the folding sight, I consider the EOTech to be well worthwhile. Bruce
It has a folding rear sight, why not a folding front sight? But yeah, you won't notice it too much anyway.
A hacksaw will fix that front sight problem in about 2 minutes. Plus you'll have the uber-cool "post apocolyptic" look everybody wants...
If you can afford a $900.00 sight for the gun OK. I don't know you and you said he has been shooting for a year but iron sights are the basic for any shooting. It was a year before I put a scope on my own Sons gun and it it glass. Not bashing at all I love to see more kids shooting just my .02
Good point about the irons, I agree. All of the guns he's tried have been iron sites, including my cherished .308 Wichita pistol. I have to say he's not really a marksman at age 16, so this will maybe be a little more of a fun diversion for him to try on the .223. I ended up ordering an EOtech 552 from Natchez Shooters Supply yesterday.
You may want to ensure your "cowitness" the iron sights and the red dot of your choice. That means you have the exact same hold on the weapon, and line of sight, regardless of which sights you use. So if I have my flip up iron sight flipped up, and I use it, and turn on my optic, the red dot is seen through the rear sight and overlays the front sight. If you turn the optic off, you just see the iron sights. I went a step further and have a quick release mount for my red dot optic, so it is easly put on and taken off. Barry
