Spent the past 5 days riding in Big Bend. 1251 square miles of high mountain desert along the Rio Grand. Me and my friend Charlie camped in the Chisos Basin and took day rides thru the mountains and into the desert. The weather was great, We were camped at 5400 feet, 37 F at night and 70's during day. About 10 to 15 deg. warmer in the valley. It's a great place to get away, you can ride all day, sometimes days without ever seeing anyone else, but go Oct thru May. Starting in June it gets way hot reaching well over 100 deg. in the valley. Up in the mountains you'll see black bear, mule deer and mountain lions. Down in the valley , javelina and white tail deer.

On the Old River Road. 51 miles of rocks, dirt and deep sand. The next day we meet a couple of guys on BMW's, one GS800 and the other on a 1200 that had just came off the Old River Rd. The guy on the 1200 was on it's first time off pavement. He really struggled thru the sand and had crashed, ripping off his wind screen and a turn indicator. [IMG]

This is a Jacal (pronounced Ha-Kahl). Built by Gilberto Luna. He lived in it until 1947. Raised a big family and died at 108 years old.

I must make a pilgrimage to the Big Bend. I heard the weather is much better in the winter.

Yea, you need to Oct thru April. May might not be bad but staring in June it gets really hot in the valley.
