I just ordered two of those boxes Jayhawk. I'll try and get pics and a report up, but I'm trying to get them built before I move in 9 days.
awesome :) I got a pelican topcase now but more storage would be great :) I'm really just curious if they will crack or break if they get a little bump...
I painted mine silver mostly to keep them from becoming bike mounted ovens, but as the paint isn't holding up that well they may well become truck bed liner'd mini ovens anyway.
has anyone tried these aluminum night vision boxes? thinking they might be lighter than ammo cans, but the latches look cheesy. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=270597889857&Category=156459&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2
yeah, I was figuring they were probbly of a decent gauge. For the price, it can't hurt to get a set and try them out. I'm figuring that with the 15$ shipping fee, they probably don't weight the 26 lbs that an ammo can does, and once cleaned up, I think they might look nice on the r90. might even be a little big though. I think I'll order one, and if it is too big as a pannier, i'll use it as a top case on my krauser rack.
I have these on my bike now: http://cgi.ebay.com/Huge-40mm-ammo-can-beautiful-/160458495081?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255c125469 they are the 40 MM cans. Plenty big for stuff like tools and jumper cables, etc ... not quite big enough for overnight and such ... but that's what bungies are for. They are a bit heavy ... nothing like the big cans that weigh 24lb a piece ... but these definately weight ~12 a piece. They're 18x6x10 and they look pretty streamline on the bike ... Let me see If I can post a pic .. And:
Crazydrummerdude, I never really answered your question: "why paint the boxes?" I painted them white on the inside so's I could see shit. Next time, I'll use a white etching primer and be done with it. I was cruising through an auto parts store when I saw some rattlecan stuff that came darned close to my BMW tank's color.
I just mounted one of those. It is all aluminum, so it's not too heavy, and I made a bracket out of aluminum from Home Depot. I found it at a yard sale for $5, so I couldn't pass it up. I added the hinges and handles. Here are some pictures of it installed on the clapped-out Bandit: I just ordered some panniers from Cabela's for $7.49 each. Yeah, i saw those on ebay and thought they would make a good top case. I'll have to insulate it and use it as an ice chest for beer!!
Angle grinder to remove the slides on the sides and the handles on the ends, sandpaper, primer and then the cheap wally world bedliner.
It is a rear tire, and it does handle differently than the original style tire, but I got used to it. It doesn't roll into turns as easily.
No one could be satisfied using those heavy, inelegant ammo cans for luggage. These have served pretty well for my winter (Keys) transportation. Didn't bother taking off the stiffening ribs, just used some washers to clear and attach to SW Motech frames. They come off frame and all with 3 D-zus fasteners per side. I do have to remember to pack the heavy (beverages) groceries into the left box first and unload it last so that the bike doesn't fall over! Still thinking about version 2.0, if I were to line the box with rigid styrofoam (insulation) and install a petcock (drain) in the bottom I think it would hold at least 8 dozen shrimp. Then I wouldn't need to start the truck until it was time to tow the camper back north! Bruce
I just finished mount my cheap-ass panniers from Cabela's. I used 1" x 1/8" aluminum stock from Home Depot to make the mounting brackets. Here are some pictures: Here they are with the lower brackets installed: They weigh 2.54 pounds each: The right side mounting bracket: The left side mounting bracket: Inside the box: The left side mounted: The right side mounted: Rear view: Full side view: They are not the most heavy duty, but I designed them to carry White Castle Slyders back this weekend. I should be able to fit about 30 in each box. Here is a link to the "White Castle Run 2010" if anyone wants more info: White Castle Run 2010
HOLY HELL!!!! Isaw you and your riding partner at the Mcdonalds in Hurricane Utah about a week ago!! I was on the red KLR. how was the rest of your trip? Thom
Boxes? Psssh. Everyone knows the real old-school cheapskate goes for ammo bags: http://www.swisslink.com/FS/1/Atom19575.jpg Two of these vintage Swiss ammo bags, a five dollar thrift store leather belt, and a few rivets and I have a set of bags that exude WWI flying ace charm. The set cost me less than a good meal and drinks out and they each hold a six pack of beer or two bottles of wine nicely. Win.
Hi,... here is what i did with the ammo box panniers. Scrap 3/4" tube, a few bends and a little welding and bam!... a rack and boxes all for under $65 !..... I customized the width to give my wife more wiggle room on long trips when we go two up And let the kids sticker up their side (oops)... all in all really easy. NEXT ! .....I'm fabricating a burrito holder for my handle bars...1 chipotle burrito, 1 iced americano .... Yup.."RONTECH".. I pick up where Touratech leaves off! Aw..crap!....how do i post pictures so this makes sense?
