RTW with Noah on a KTM 690

    Care to chime in here Mr. Colebatch…?? I'm not about to start a pissing duel, but, I think you are both right. The best bike is the one you are riding RTW now.

    Bajaj built bikes are all over india riding up into the Himalayas and all sorts of places so, I think a 390 adv would do very well. Take a look around here: http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/, there's some lovely rides.

    Theres one way to look at it - if a Royal Enfield can do it then anything can.

    All I'm saying is time will tell. If Bajaj can hold to KTM standards, the 390 is promising to be a great motor. But next time you are in a KTM shop that has a 390 duke and a 690 duke. Look closely at both of them. There is a difference.

    I know you are fast because the 690 best :D

    looks like you are in a great time to be in Japan the F1 race in suzuka is in the October Fri 11 to Sun 13 not great season for F1 fans but the suzuka race is always great and this is the last year of the hyper rev and noisy V8.

    This has nothing to do with your ride but seeing as you're in Japan see if you can find Tampopo - a movie about life, love, death, perhaps also the meaning of life, and the quest for the ultimate noodle. Saw it ages ago on the TV with English subtitles and can't get on DVD here in the UK. Worth a watch while you have to stay off your feet.

    Basically, if you come in on a ferry, you can use a C5014 form to temp import your bike. I don't know if it can be done if you ship the bike in a container but on a ferry (ride on, ride off) you can. So from Korea or Russia, this is an option. Although if you are coming from Korea.. you will need a Carnet because they require one.

    How do the Forma boots compare to the Sidi's? Are they as strong do you think?

    What about size-wise?

    I know the Formas are not that stiff. Terry rode with them last year and had to change them after 10000km - too soft. But they should be a lot better than the sidi adventures, which use the same context of "adventure" as most factory "adventure" bikes. I.e they are for 98% asphalt and 2% light graded gravel.

    Walter, not to get too bar off track on Noah's thread, but what Adventure boot would you recommend these days for waterproof and long-term rugged? ... for Noah of course :getiton

    How has the helmet mount worked for you? had to re apply?

    I have to agree with you on the SIDI boots. They came apart with my kind of riding. As for the Forma boots, they are more comfortable and stiffer then the Sidi. I have 10,000 km on them now and they feel/look brand new. They are softer then a MX boot but they do keep my feet dry. Plus, I can stand up all day in them. Something I was not able to do in the SIDI. My Tech7s at home are stiffer, but right now, I'm really liking these Forma boots. Especially not that my hard offroad days are limited. When I'm crossing the Australian outback or something.. it might be a different story. :deal

    I don't have a mount on the bike. Never got around to it. Never had to re-stick the helmet mount. I tried a mount on the snowboard this winter and it came off after 5 minutes. Not sure what the deal was there.

    There is no such animal. Sidi AFAIK are the only waterproof non pure road boots. And they are limited utility off road.

    The Sidis are short ... not a lot taller than road boots. They dont protect all the way up to your knees like the MX boots. I have never ridden in them so dont know how stiff the soles are, but judging from the shortness of the boot I dont think sidi have built a boot designed for more than brief standing on the pegs sessions.

    I reckon you have to have about Tech 7 level or above before you can stand up in them day after day for several months and not have the pegs starting to bore into your feet. So far I have found the 7s the best compromise between comfort and support for a multimonth trip.

    But you can forget about waterproofing ... unless someone from Alpine Stars is reading this thread and says ... "hmm OK how about we build a tech 7 with a goretex liner and call it the Alpine Stars Adventure Boot ..."

    Even then the problem is goretex boots take ages to dry out when they do get wet ... probably 10 times longer than normal boots. And when you are wading tru water crossings 20 times a day, they get filled on the first or second crossing, waterproof or not. Cause the water is deeper than your knees.

    The Alpinestars Toucan is their Adventure boot and unfortunately it has lots in common with SIDI Adventures and nothing to do with Tech7 or Tech10.
