The BMW Zumo does not have the option to turn off auto recalculate when off route so it is not as up to date as the latest 550 version.
Don't be. . this persons statement is absolutely rubbish! Like 1 post above me said: If it does not have "recalculation on/off" its not a 3.30v 550! In fact it's not a 550.. :dog but something old and full of bugs like it once used to be....
All Righty Then... just trying to convince myself I don't have a POS "full of bugs". If I can just get my Routes to transfer correctly I will be happy for now. Then I can move on to the next level of disappointment. FlagRS
Yeah but I am in the next level of disappointment. I lobbied my dealer for the Zumo when I bought my new ADV (which was not included in the promotion) and now that I have it wish I had a 'real' 550. If only I had know that BMW was lying about what it was and was not...
You didn't read this post from another thread? http://advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5170293&postcount=22 <table id="post5170293" class="tborder" align="center" border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr valign="top"> <td class="alt1" id="td_post_5170293"> <!-- message --> According to a previous post, when an XM receiver was plugged into the BMW Zumo the Zumo responded with "XM is not supported". The text on the box would indicate that only a Traffic Message Channel (TMC) FM receiver is supported (in the box). I have highlighted some inconsistencies on the comparison chart. </td></tr></tbody></table>
Dang! No I didn't. In fact I didn't think to even search here, Zumo 550 means to me a specific model with specific features. It never crossed my mind that BMW would offer a 'Zumo 550' that really wasn't... That really bugs me, but live and learn I guess. Thanks for the chart...
I thought it was most useful as an indication of how willing they are to mislead their customers with regards to the specification of their competitor's - AKA their own supplier - product.
First, I want to be clear - I am the last person that would defend the BMW ZUMO. But...(you knew that was coming), even with the misleading "fact-sheet" showing the BMW Navigators vs. Garmin units, BMW has never described the BMW ZUMO as a Garmin 550 device. It is a BMW ZUMO NAVIGATOR. My guess is that BMW NA contracted with Garmin to produce a thousand or so units - cheap - to use as bike purchase incentives. It remains to be seen if, or how often, ongoing software maintenance was included in that contract.
Sorry, but totally incorrect. In fact, the PDF on the documentation CD that CAME WITH THE UNIT is titled "BMW_zumo_550_OM_EN.pdf" That wasn't the only indication but it's the one I have the facts on in front of me...
I stand corrected. And, if anyone paid for one of these you should have a case to be made to BMW, and Garmin, that this unit is not a Zumo 550 since that unit clearly does not meet all of the 550 specifications.
And what about that little sticker on the bottom... But the comparison on that fact sheet above must be wrong on more then one point. The BMW zumo is compared to a Zumo was never supplied. Specs look like a 400 - 450 model. But "only basemaps" was never in any of the boxes. At least one regional mapset was supplied. The BMW Zumo is the same as the 550 in most specs: It holds an entire region pre loaded (USA - EU) so it must have the higher internal memory. Other differences is only: > Different motormounting options, no car cradle > No XM radio on the BMW version (useless in the EU anyway, since XM does not exist over here)
Don't forget about the software being versions behind the actual 550 with no information on possible updates on the horizon. Jeez, brand it however you want, but don't flippin' cripple it! How does that benefit ANYONE? It's a nice example of how a minor thing (the GPS software) can turn a customer sour even with me loving the bigger thing (the bike). Annoying.
I was on the phone with Garmin software support for a long time to get my Quest2 up and running with the 2008 maps. This guy was sharp, and navigated in my computer and changed all sorts of settings to make sure things ran smoothly. I began to discuss an upgrade to a Zumo, and he said that would a great upgrade because the Zumo is so much easier to work with, and essentially appears as another drive unit so files can be easily manipulated, etc. When I mentioned a BMW Zumo, he said from THEIR viewpoint, it presents an obstacle for them when providing support, and the BMW proprietary software is not something he would recommend. He took a few minutes to look through Garmin's support database for staff comments regarding the BMW version, and he concluded "stay with the non-BMW if you want easy software maintenance." Nice to know, because I was going to pay the premium to get the black BMW unit with the data link to the bike. Fred
No updates? http://www.bmwmotorcyclegear.com/info08/specs_zumo.asp Of course, this just tells you how to update the dealer list.
Anyone try to upload the dealer list to their regular 550 Zumo? I don't feel like being a guinea pig today.
I uploaded the list to my 550 and it shows up in the map list. If you turn it on, it will overlay the active map with named icons for all the dealers when you reach a suitable zoom. You can select the icon and add it to your favorites and all of the contact info will show up. The downside is that the 550 can't search through the dealer list like the BMW version will.
