anybody else notice that once you get some larger maps downloaded that the memory used goes up almost 3x what it should be? The app size is about 30mb and I have downloaded about 170mb in maps yet the app is using 500mb of memory when it should be closer to 200mb.

Did you try clearing the cache completely? I suspect you have remnant data.

Seems that once you break the 100 mb or so size this happens

This isn't to do with Apple's new Retina display is it? I fear my 16 gig 4S may soon be running out of space as all my apps update to Retina versions.

No I'm using the iPhone 4. I have been in contact with motionx for a couple of weeks about this issue and they thought the last update fixed the issue, it didnt I was just checking to see if anybody else had noticed.

    That's interesting!

According to the MotionX app, I have about 510MB of downloaded tiles, and 61MB in the map cache. But Settings -> General -> Usage reports 1.5GB of storage by MotionX.

I'll be sending them an email for sure, the more vocal we are the more likely they are to fix it. :1drink

MotionX support responded to my email overnight:

I have run through their fully-close-and-relaunch-five-times process, and it restored about 100MB of the extra disk space.

Now I'm trying to use iExplorer to find where the extra disk space is... but it's incredibly slow going (iExplorer sucks!). I'll keep everyone updated. :-)

My usage is opposite GPS-Drive is largest, have voice direction if that makes any difference.
Looking forward to your posted answers from MotionX.

GPS drive will let you store up to 2 GB of maps. Clear your map storage and it should drop back to normal. To check how much you have cached got to menu then settings then to map settings an look at storage used and if you want you can clear stored maps and change how much you want memory you want to use to store maps.

That still seems pretty large considering the app is only like 20mb. Let me play with mine for a min and see if it's an issue with both of the motionx apps.

But the size of the app is irrelevant. It's the size of the maps downloaded and cached that constitutes the bulk of the reported size.

as long as hes still talking about gps drive and he cleared his saved maps there should be nothing else in the app other than maybe a few saved locations and such but nothing that would chew up 100mb

GPS Drive has the same issue. I just added about 10mb of preloaded maps and it made my usage go up by 40mb. BTW with no saved maps my app size is right around 40mb

Just got another email from them this morning, they've figured out what's going on.

It turns out they had a bit of a mix up, and the problem actually isn't fixed in the most recent public build, but will be in the next one.

Here's the email they sent me:

So, we just need to wait until the next release... and then every time we open the app the wasted space will get a bit smaller until it's gone. :clap

what i got from them: (I have been on contact wtih them for over a month now trying to resolve this issue):

    "Hi Matthew,
Thank you for the additional information, we are seeing the same behavior on our devices in house. Our team is having a look at both Drive and GPS now and we hope to have improvements in future versions of our apps. That said, its possible this is iOS related and improvements may be several versions away. In the meantime as a thank you I have added two months of live voice guidance to the account \xxxxxxxxxxxxx.

    All the best,
    Tom Lewin"
