What are my options for a small displacement sport touring bike?

I've decided I have a hole in my garage that needs filling, and I want to pick up a sport-touring bike. I would prefer a bike with displacement under one liter, and a full fairing. There are lots of choices for sport touring bikes in the over one liter category, but I'm a relative newcomer to motorcycles, and I don't yet feel ready for that much power. I'd also like to keep the displacement down in order to burn less fuel. I rode several thousand miles on an old Honda cb550 with a full fairing, and I liked it, but I'd prefer something more modern, prefereably with electronic ignition and fuel injection.

In a perfect world, I'd be looking for something like a Honda ST, Concours, or FJR, but with a smaller engine. I also prefer a "standard" type seating position over the sport bike crouch.

I've been looking around a lot at the sport touring category, and the closest thing I can find that suits my needs is a Honda Pacific Coast 800. Yeah, I know. You don't have to tell me.

Are there other choices that I'm missing? I'm willing to consider new or used, but there don't appear to be any bikes on the market new, under one liter, with a full fairing.

Though not fully faired, all these bikes can be outfitted with hard bags and they all have aftermarket windscreen options. Plus, they are a lot more versatile than a fullblown 1L sport tourer.

VFR, FZ6, and Ninja - meets your description well - add hard luggage and go. Risers can be added if position it too forward.

    Good luck

How about this shameless plug for my SV650S for sale on SVrider.com - haven't offered it up here just yet.

Could even throw in some cortech saddle bags, and tail bag (blue if you care).

Just bought a '04 VFR - once I mod the pegs I'll be 100% happy with it.

    V-strom 650.

I didn't like the FZ6. I keep riding my friends, but really never can get used to it.

Ninja 650 is a good one, too, but I'd go for the V-strom 650 first, despite being a die-hard Green fan.

I just bought a DL1000 last week, and so far have no regrets at all.

    I've owned K75, VFR800, F650, all gone now.
I recently purchased a 2001 Bandit 600 with little over 10,000 mi. from Craigslist and it was delivered to my driveway from NJ.

Maybe not as light as FZ6, but it does have a centerstand.
I've put about 800 miles on it in 6 weeks.

The best company of the Japanese 4 makes a 600cc, fully faired sport-touring bike. I know people who have them, and they love them.

Check out the ZZR600...what's not to like?

Thanks for all the replies gang.

Oddly, the scooters are more tempting that most of the rest of your recommendations. It seems wierd that scooters have larger fairings than most motorcycles. I think I may have to try out a Silverwing.

The longest single day distance I've travelled with my $1699 250cc Chinese scooter is little over 260 miles, 90% of the riding was between 35-55 mph on two lane roads or four lane highways.

My scooter does offer plenty of wind protection, but the weight of the scooter is somewhat discerning on highways when 18-wheelers are blowing by at 60-70 mph. Maybe a 650cc scooter with more weight would be better for long distance travels.

Personally, if I have no hurry to get to anywhere and I want to be most fuel efficient, 250cc scooter is good enough, it has plenty of underseat storage, easy enough to put on soft side luggage or lockable topbox. With the waay I ride it, I regularly get over 85 mpg.
